Lion members are delighted to announce that Wetherby Ward members have secured Santa’s Sleigh for their Christmas activities.

A base in Wetherby has been found for Wetherby District Lions Club to store the sleigh they use for their Santa processions in the town over the coming festive period. The sleigh needs to be kept locally to prevent it from being damaged. The Lions then help Santa through the streets of Wetherby collecting money for local charities.

The Wetherby Ward members are funding the secure storage from their discretionary funds.

Wetherby Ward Councillor Alan Lamb said: “Not being able to keep the sleigh in Wetherby meant that there was a real danger that the Lions wouldn’t have been able to do their traditional Christmas charity collection. Last year the sleigh was damaged transporting it to Wetherby each time, so the Lions needed somewhere local to store it over the festive period. I am delighted that we have been able to work with the local community to source and fund a place to house the sleigh. It would have been too easy to let this slip away and then we might not have got it back in future years".

Wetherby Ward Councillor Norma Harrington added: “The sleigh is a Christmas tradition and it would have been a great shame if the Lions were not able to do it this year. They collect a significant amount of money for local charities over the Christmas period and it is always a delight to see the sleigh lit up with Santa taking time out to visit Wetherby".

"You can also see Santa at the ‘Dickensian Christmas Market’ to be held on 8th December 2019 in the Market Place, Wetherby".
