Come along again on 24th January 2026

'Lions’ Midwinter Lunch'

“Can I have the recipe please?”  After second helpings of the main course (and dessert), one of our guests asked for the recipes.  However, although the meal was widely praised and enjoyed, chefs Alan Lamb and Ian Giddings kept them a secret!

Tables had been laid and dressed with flowers, chefs Alan and Ian, ably assisted by Linda Richards and Natalya were busy in the kitchen and Lions and many other helpers were dressed and ready for the occasion.

Following words of welcome from Lion President Martin Doxey, several games of Bingo were very professionally called by Connor Mulhall (Deputy Wetherby Town Mayor) and many prizes were won.

Then a wonderful main course of chicken ‘Lionnaise’ with seasonal vegetables and baked potatoes accompanied by wines and beers was very much appreciated by the 180 guests.  For dessert, a vanilla sponge with real home-made custard was served and the meal finished off with teas and coffees.

After lunch, all guests were entertained by ‘Tandem’ with musicians Phil and Ross which had some guests and Lions dancing.  Our very happy guests each received a ‘goodie bag ’on leaving.

For over 35 years, Wetherby District Lions have organised a post-Christmas party to help combat the loneliness, winter blues and sense of isolation which can set in at this time of year.  A big ‘Thank You’ to all our helpers on the day including 'HDP Event Medical Services' and 'AV-Matrix Ltd' who supplied the sound systems.  Also, to 'Bon  Bons (Wholesale) Wetherby' for the wonderful confectionery packages for each of our guests !

This event is made possible by the generosity of Wetherby and district residents who support our Santa sleigh ride outings in the area and our 'Dickensian Christmas Market & Craft Fayre' event.  A special thanks to Leeds City Council Community Committees for a small donation to the event.

Please continue to support Wetherby District Lions who in turn support your communities.

And for next year:-

The 'Post Midwinter' complimentary lunch for the elderly and isolated of our community takes place again on Saturday 24th January 2026 commencing at 12 Noon.  Lion members and their families, 'Friends of Lions' and many supporters from the local community will again come together to 'serve' the meal to our guests.  This complements our motto 'We Serve'.

We are hoping that Alan Lamb and his catering team and Wetherby High School will again provide the meal and the facilities without whom we could not stage the event.  Following the meal our guests will be treated to a variety show in the school hall.

If you are over 60 years of age and wish to attend our event then click here to contact us.  See you there ! !
